The oldest University in the country, it was founded in 1898 and is the first national university in China. Also known as bei da this university is known for its intellectual freedom and having had some of China's top leaders and thinkers, including people such as Mao Zedong, Lu Xun, etc.
Beijing is regarded both nationally and internationally as one of the best universities, being ranked 14th in the world in 2007 by The Times Higher Education Supplement and together with Tsinghua is the university with largest application numbers in the country.
Trying to establish itself as a world leading university, Beijing University has put strong emphasis on its teaching quality and research facilities. As a result it boasts being a world leading research institute and having the biggest library in Asia. Postgraduate courses are offered to foreigners available in Chinese and/or English.
As opposed to Tsinghua University, which has a strong Western architectural influence, Beijing University is renowned for its beautiful traditional Chinese architecture.
